Sunnyvale voters approve 6-district election system

March 3, 2020

On March 3, 2020, voters in the City of Sunnyvale approved a change to the City’s Charter to require by-district elections starting in November 2020.  The by-district Council elections will replace the City’s existing at-large election system.

Prior to the March 3 primary, the Sunnyvale City Council held public meetings and education sessions on the district map-drawing process.  GBDH’s co-counsel, Asian Law Alliance and Asian Americans Advancing Justice – Asian Law Caucus, organized community members and promoted public participation in the creation of a district map.  In November 2019, the City Council approved a six-district map created and supported by a diverse coalition of Sunnyvale residents, including members of the Asian American community, Latino community, mobile home park residents, renters, faith organizations, and representatives from multiple neighborhood organizations.  This map will be used in the first by-district elections for City Council in November 2020.
