March 17, 2016
On April 1, 2016, Linda M. Dardarian and Andrew P. Lee presented on a panel entitled, War and Peace – The Saga of Willits v. City of Los Angeles, a Class Action Battled on Four Fronts with Historic Results at the Disability Rights Bar Association’s Annual Meeting in Baltimore. The case resulted in a $1.4 billion settlement with the City of Los Angeles to make the city’s sidewalks, curb ramps, cross walks and other walkways accessible to individuals with mobility disabilities. The panel explained how the case was developed and litigated over several years in state and federal trial and appellate courts, how the City tried to undercut the case repeatedly by settling it with other lawyers for significantly less relief, and how the Plaintiffs secured the settlement despite the City’s efforts to thwart it.
