GBDH, along with co-counsel Benjamin Edelman of the Law Offices of Benjamin Edelman, obtained final approval of a settlement that will provide nearly $7 million in refunds to American Airlines passengers who were charged to check bags that should have been free under governing contracts. Under the settlement in Bazerman v. American Airlines, Inc., individuals who filed timely, valid claims and were verified as members of the settlement class will receive either a full refund plus interest, or a 75% refund, of incorrectly charged checked bag fees. In total, approximately 191,025 class members will receive refunds, totaling roughly $6,809,178. At the hearing for final approval, Judge William G. Young of the District of Massachusetts praised the settlement and touted GBDH’s work as “exemplary.” He approved at least $2.25 million in attorneys’ fees and costs. Under the settlement, attorneys’ fees have no effect on class members’ recoveries.
